Human Nature is planning a new neighbourhood on the former Phoenix Industrial Estate in Lewes, East Sussex. We believe that this precious brownfield site represents an extraordinary opportunity to design and build a remarkable place that will enable people to live easy, communal and low-impact lives at this critical time for the planet. We intend for the Phoenix to be a benchmark scheme that will lead the way and act as an exemplar for future developments both in the UK and abroad.

Based on the principle of the five-minute neighbourhood, where most daily needs can be reached on foot, the Phoenix will be stitched together by green and gentle streets that are safe for walking, cycling and for children to play. As well as different types of homes, there will be an abundance of shared spaces and places, communal gardens and food-growing, co-working, creative and community spaces, a Health Hub, a community canteen, an arts venue and exercise facilities for all ages. Many of these amenities will be in and around refurbished industrial structures, by a neighbourhood square that leads on to a new riverside walk and footbridge.

We have assembled a world class team of experts in sustainable construction, green energy, low-carbon mobility and, of course, brilliant architecture and design. Our plans for the site have been developing fast as we work alongside the South Downs National Park Authority. In parallel, we have had many meetings with our neighbours, the local community and politicians, culminating in a three-day Design Festival in September 2021. The feedback from the festival is informing our more detailed designs as we work towards a public exhibition in spring 2022, prior to submitting a planning application.
