Manifesto for Remarkable Places
Turning 60, Jonathan Smales took the time to reflect on 40 years working in sustainability and gave a talk to friends and collaborators at FCBStudios in London. The centrepiece of this was a ‘Manifesto for Remarkable Places’. This was born of frustration, but also hope, that the built environment sector might yet deliver on the opportunities offered on a plate by sustainability. But with a hard edge, that real estate has no right to exist for its own sake. Construction itself creates harmful footprints, so it can only be justified if it regenerates place and provides opportunities for sustainable living.
