Little Holland, Norwich

Working with the landowner to prepare a plan pursuant to an unviable planning consent while making better use of the scarce city land and creating a new edge to Norwich. Our urban designer, Paul Murrain, had the genius idea of using the urban form of the Jordaan (Amsterdam, NL) as a precedent – referring to the adjacent rivers and wetlands – and proposed a new canal as the firm eastern boundary. With a more compact plan, fine-grained urbanism and a commitment to car freedom we were able to advance a proposal that is economically attractive, would house three times more families and create a flagship scheme for the city.
