The ‘Better Together’ driver in the Framework addresses the importance and benefits of engagement, of growing community and of collective action to address local and global challenges. This driver – founded in connectivity – is also concerned with physical connections and patterns and modes of movement. Many towns and cities are now congested, their air is heavily polluted, the streets are dangerous to walk or cycle on and near-impossible to play in. Movement has become so slow, so frustrating and quite often so expensive that it is hindering productivity and diminishing quality of life.

This nexus of issues means there has to be a transformation in land use planning, street systems, design and movement modes and technology. One or two of these without the other(s) cannot work. We want to maximise accessibility and optimise movement while radically cutting our carbon and wider environmental footprint. In short, to be faster, greener and smarter.
